Brighten My Day

poor color faded shirt

This weeks project is an old favorite. I love this shirt. I have had it for 3 and a half years now. Lately it has gotten an little faded and dingy looking. I started looking for a replacement, but I have just not come across anything that works for me.  So I decided to do a little “Fountain of Youth” treatment on the color.

I started out by spraying the armpits of the shirt with Oxy Clean. The salt from my sweat could offset the distribution of color. After it soaked for a couple of hours I threw it in the wash. (you always want to work with clean clothes)

salt and dye

Then I took my new big pot and filled it with water and turned it on high. When it started to lightly simmer, I turned it down to med and added a half cup of salt and 1/4 cup of Rit yellow dye. After I made sure it was mixed (if the dye is not entirely mixed you will be sorry) I dropped in my yellow shirt and stirred it every few minutes for about 20 minutes.

The final product turned out quite nice. The shirt now looks brand new and, unless I spill something killer on it, I have a few more years with it.  For more on dyeing.

All done.

I remember this shirt! It looks great. Good job. I never thought about dying any of my shirts. I think most of my cute ones though I need to lose a few more pounds before I can fit into them.
